The friendship with the ca. 50,000 inhabitants of Biel, Canton Bern in Switzerland has developed since 1959 via contact which already existed between Biel and the Dutch town of Almelo. Besides it s importance as a tourist resort, the town of Biel has made a name for itself, particularly in the watch making industry (the brands of Swatch, Rolex, and Omega originate here), and the town is well-known in the branch of communication and computer science. Relations between Biel and Iserlohn are primarly on the youth and sport level.
