Town partnership with Chorzow established on 22 May 2004

The Iserlohn Town Council in its meeting of 17 February 2004 decided with a wide majority to establish a town partnership with the Polish town of Chorzow. Now the new town partnership is officially "sealed".
Between 20 and 22 May a delegation under the leadership of the President of the Town of Chorzow Marek Kopel were as guests in Iserlohn. With the support of the Chorzow Committee Chairperson Ewa Ruschkowski a programme for the visit of 28 guests was prepared in the Town Hall. Mainly the people of Iserlohn should have the possibility to get to know the new partner town and set up contacts with the visitors.

Information about the Town of Chorzow

Wolnosci Street
Situated in the middle of the conurbation of Katowice the 115,000 inhabitants of the Town of Chorzow form the centre of the major industry in Upper Silesia. The changes in Poland and the years of the re-establised self administration have had a postive effect on the town. In the last years a signficant college centre has developed here which is of great importance within the region. The 751 year old Chorzow borders directly on to Katowice, the towns merge. The airport Pyrzowice is situated close by.

Slaski-Stadium
The town portrait is formed by restored town houses. The people of Chorzow are particulary proud of their representativ Wolnosci Street which was newly renovated a few years ago. With its restored town houses, the Post building erected in the 19th century in new gothic style, a fountain square worth seeing and with the monumental new gothic Hedwig church it has become a town centre and meeting poing of the town people and also for visitors from the surrounding area. Here you can find elegant shops, restaurants and cafés, pubs and galeries which harmonise well together with the wonderul architecture of the town.

Chorzow-Museum
The cultural life of Chorzow is formed amongst other by the "Teatr Tozrywki", one of the best music theatres in Poland. On the town border a recreation area has been created, with parks, a leisure area, a zoo, an open-air museum "ethnographic park" in Upper Silesia and sport arenas.
