The historical factory buildings installation Maste-Barendorf counts as one of the most important, in the original character still retained industrial establishment dating from the 19th century within the Märkischer Kreis. In 1981 the Town of Iserlohn acquired the installation and placed it under a conservation order in 1983. The historical building substance of the ten houses, mostly built adjoining, is still present and substantially to a large degree unchanged. Since 1985 the reconstruction of the Museum and Artists village began in the installation described as "Historical Factory Buildings Maste-Barendorf".

Besides several artists workshops, one can today find the Needle Museum with the connecting Hair Pin Factory and a Brass Foundry.

Needle producing machines

The needle production is one of the early important production branches of the town´s economic history. The Museum shows the industrial production sequence of the needle production and accommodates a variety of articles from the needle trade. In the hair pin factory one can find the fully-functional machinery from the Hair Pin Factory Hermann Moritz & Son which was resident in Iserlohn between 1881 and 1966 (tours are open to the public).

Likewise, a living example of the local economic history and a previous resident in Barendorf´s industrial area is the Brass Foundry. With the regularly occurring demonstrations visitors can watch the casting of brass parts.
